The ex-husband of former US first lady Jill Biden was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, officials said Tuesday.
William Stevenson, 77, was jailed on Monday and faces charges of first-degree murder in the death of Linda Stevenson, according to a grand jury indictment filed in Delaware.
On 28 December 2025, officers from the New Castle county division of police responded to a reported domestic dispute at the Stevensons’ home, where they found Linda unresponsive. Officers immediately administered life-saving measures, but he did not survive.
In a press statement issued at the time, police said Linda Stevenson’s body has been turned over to the Delaware division of forensic science, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of her death.
Dr Jill Biden, then Jill Tracy Jacobs, married William Stevenson in February 1970, as an 18-year-old student at the University of Delaware. The couple was married for five years. Jill met senator Joe Biden in March 1975.
William Stevenson is currently in custody at the Howard Young correctional institution after failing to post $500,000 bail.
The Office of Joe and Jill Biden did not immediately respond to a Guardian request for comment.
