NetflixAfter five seasons, stranger things will end – but another portal has opened as the creators behind the show and Ross Duffer, tell the BBC series Spin-Off in development.
“It’s early days but we’re excited about it,” Matt Duffer said. “It’s new characters and a new mystery, so it’s different, but it’s in the same world as stranger things.”
The pair felt there was more to explore, but Matt explained to Forest Ross that they always saw the original story as a self-contained arc and it was definitely “these characters”.
Clarity around the ending was always part of the plan, and Matt said the final scene “was something we planned from the start”.
“We always know what we’re aiming for so it’s like our North Star and we build the whole season around that final scene.”
Season Five is set in the fall of 1987. Hawkins, Indiana, is targeted by the opening of rifts and the group of friends must find and kill Vecna. At the same time, the town is under military Quarantine while the hunt for the eleven intensifies.
The brothers, who were still in their early thirties when the show started, had always planned for four out of five seasons, but it seems that they were angry that they were able to get that better.
Getty ImagesWhat started as a nostalgic horror about a lost boy in a sleepy town quickly grew into one of the biggest global netflix hits.
“When you do the show, you get so well known that you forget how far it’s come, and every season we put everything we put into it,” Ross said. “And when we do one season, we don’t know if we’re going to take a second.”
It’s a sentiment shared by the cast. Joe Kery, whose character Harrington goes from a high school jock to a heroic mentor—like the BBC he remembers someone well and isn’t sure if he’ll ever see them again.
“One season was like an indie film and now it’s your crazy big-budget movie,” the 33-year-old said incredulously.
By the time the final season wrapped, after a year of filming, “it felt like we’d been working on it forever”.
“But we had a lot of time to make it and the friendships we made didn’t go anywhere. We’re going to be in each other’s lives.”
Natalia Dyer, who plays Nancy Wheeler, says the friendships they built mirrored the camera of their on-screen characters.
“These characters have this shared secret world that they all know and in real life, we have a similar thing as people who know the show inside out.”
Charlie Hatton, who plays Natalia’s on-screen boyfriend Jonathan Beers, agreed and explained that “the events of the show changed these characters forever”.
There are reports that not all is plain sailing. Sunday’s mail was just reported That Millie Bobby Brown suffered harassment and bullying against her co-star David Harbour, but has not yet been confirmed.
However, the cast inistist has a close friendship between everyone, while the Duffer brothers said that they felt a great responsibility to protect the younger brothers throughout the entire filming.
“When we turned them down we didn’t know the show was going to be what it was and you hear a lot of horror stories about young people being violent,” Ross said.
“I think it helps to have more young members in the cast so they don’t go through anything alone and can turn to each other during challenging times.”
That unity is an important help for Finn Wolfshard, who plays Mike Wheeler and says that growing content is a challenge “because life changes like things change in common”.
His on-screen, and maybe also off-screen, best friends Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo agree, and the Trio starts laughing at how young they are.
NetflixI asked the young men how they felt about showing the end and walking on new projects, and the Gatn was the first to admit that they felt their resignation.
“I’m a little shaky and have a little anxiety, but I think that’s the point.”
The 23-year-old, who plays Dustin Henderson, says now feels like a good time to step into an unknown era.
“Your twenties are all about change, transition and growth, and we’ve never been lucky enough to be in a position to establish our careers.
“I see that as a real blessing and I look at it as optimistic as I can because it is scary without comfort knowing that there is a stranger things that time.”
The legacy of the show is undeniable – it transformed a cast of newcomers into stars and poured a global fanbase that grew alongside it.
Caleb hopes the connection will last and the show “always and will be one of those things that reaches people, like a classic film”.
Knowing the impact on the show made the recovery even more difficult, and the last day of shooting was something Caleb would never forget.
“Everybody was there and bought us back at one stage — that feeling of home, being supported and loved, and everybody being on the same page in their connection to the show,” he said.
Netflix has announced an animated follow-up, while the details of the live-action Live Spus-off are under wraps.
This is the end of an era for the current cast. But will they come together for another project?
“Our part of the stranger’s story is done for now,” Gatn said. “But if they call us for a while, who knows?”
The first four episodes of season five will be available in the US from 26 November, with the next three arriving on Christmas Day, and the Finale in the New Year. In the UK those releases will be a day later.
