Opening morning: Focus on corruption in Ukraine

Ukraine’s Justice Minister German German Gulanhchedenko has been suspended amid an alleged corruption scandal in the country’s energy sectornothing was discovered by the specialist anti-corruption prosecution office, or Sapo.
AFP reports that authorities have accused Galush-osenko of being involved in a $100m corruption scheme orchestrated by Timur Mindich, An ally of President Volodymr Zelenskyy, and personally benefited from the scheme.
But Reuters said the ministry confirmed that he had an active investigation, but did not specify whether it was related to the corruption case.

Galushchenenko agreed with the government’s decision, said that “Suspension for the duration of the investigation is a civilized and appropriate scenario.”

The scandal comes at an especially difficult time for the administration amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and worries about how well to prepare for the coming winter, but also days after the European Union highlighted the fight against corruption as an area that needs improvement in particular If Ukraine wants to join the bloc.
