RabaeWES Streeting spoke of suggestions from the Prime Minister’s allies that he intends to challenge for the leadership “defeating Sir Keir Starmer who will oppose the media.
On Tuesday night, friends of Sir Keir Starmer said his job could be under immediate threat and that they were increasingly suspicious of his street leadership ambitions.
Speaking to the BBC on Wednesday, the health secretary said he “can’t see any circumstances where I would do that to our prime minister”.
He added that the accusations of the press against him were “the worst attack on an honest man since Joe Marler was finally expelled by the traitors”.
“Someone is watching a lot of celebrity traitors. They should buy birth,” he said.
He added that Lucy Powell, the new Deptiny representative of the Party “is part of the culture of No 10” Add: “I want to praise one of the men in the cabinet instead of the women.”
Other names mentioned as potential candidates in a leadership race include Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Backbenchers including former Secretary Louise Louise.
“He will fight it,” a minister said, before referring to a key 2021 election that Labor has lost to the conservatives, prompting Sir Keir to consider the Labor leader.
“This is not a hartlepolol moment,” they added.
“He’s the only person alive to win a general election for labour. It’s cruel to run against him after 17 months.”
To trigger a leadership contest against the Prime Minister, 20% of Labor MPS – Now 81 – must elect a challenger.
Jo White MP, Chaird of Red Wall Labor Backbench Group, told today’s program that this was “not the time or place” for a leadership challenge.
“It’s a group of people who think they’re better than the rest of us, who spend their time cherry-picking journalists’ statements and stirring the pot.
“I want to say simply: We have nothing.
“I want to say to No 10, I think they put up the wrong tree, short of Wes.”
Despite winning a landslide majority in the July 2024 general election, Sir Keir has had a rocky time in polls and opinion polls suggest he is unpopular.
There are suggestions that the government could face a crunch point after elections in Scotland and Wales and local elections in England are held next year.
A senior Labor MP told the BBC: “It’s very good to say wait for the locals, but that’s my physical base I’m sending all the councillors.”
Another labor source said: “The list of reasons for the movement of people after the progress of the budget of the day.
“If Wes is brave and takes action he might be rewarded with a prime minister at Christmas.”
