Israel’s strategic minister, Ron Dermer, a key to Benjamin Netanyahu, announced his launch after weeks in the media.
One of the most influential members of the country’s judiciary, he led months of intense negotiations with the US-led Gaza ceasefire deal that began last month.
In his launch letter, Dermer, who was appointed in 2022, said he had promised his family that he would not serve as the Head of Israel.
“This government will be defined by two [Hamas] Attack on October 7th [2023] and by prosecuting the two years’ … war that followed, ” He wrote.
“We reject the moral equivalent and fear to face our enemies with clarity and courage. Two years ago, we vigorously set up an age of security, prosperity and peace.”
Dermer’s departure follows weeks of speculation in the Israeli media. Critics have accused the US-born 54-year-old of failing to bring the war in Gaza to an early end, with some fighting corruption charges in office management.
On Wednesday, the president of Israel, Isaac Herzog, received a letter from Donald Trump urging him to consider a pardon for Netanyahu.
“While I respect the independence of the Israeli justice system, and its requirements, I believe that the ‘case’ against Iran, is politically unfair, the US is unjust.
Since the ceasefire in Gaza, Hamas has released all 20 hostages it was holding and returned the remains of 24 other dead captives.
Dermer, a former Ambassador to Washington, played a key role in US-Israeli relations throughout the conflict. Netanyahu appointed him in February to lead the truce talks, though little is known among Israelis.
The appointment while the negotiator criticized his lack of experience in the military, his rare appearance in the Hebrew Media and what is his limited understanding of the language and culture.
Elections are due in Israel within a year, and some analysts are predicting early voting.
A majority of Israelis across the political spectrum support the establishment of a powerful state inquiry under a panel appointed by the supreme court president to determine responsibility for the failures that enabled Hamas to launch its 2023 incursion into southern Israel, during which militants killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 250 hostages. Four more bodies will be returned.
The ensuing Israeli offensive has killed nearly 69,000 people in Gaza, most of them civilians.
Netanyahu rejected the fresh calls of the opposition To establish such a question on Monday, suggests that it is not “broadly supported” and that another format would be better. Opposition politicians fear a government commission that will have less power and be more easily influenced.
