Russia has failed in a high court bid to build a new embassy in Canberra, but the federal government must pay its lease, and cover the costs of the case.
The high court ruled in a majority decision that it is legal for the lease to be canceled in 2023.
But it is understood that Russia must be paid after the 99-year lease signed in 2008 for $2.75m was cancelled.

Lawyers for the Russian Federation have referred to the compensation bid as a “fallout case” if it is prevented from building a new embassy on the site.
The court found in the decision that Anthony Albanese said in the lease of the government “based on a specific advice proposed in a place that is located inside the inside of the inside of the inside of the inside of the inside of the activity that took place in this Parliament House”.
