Helen Newlove, the victims’ commissioner for England and Wales, died after a short illness, her office said.
Lady Newlove, a lifelong conservative, will be Reappolicly Commissioner in October 2023 after two terms in the role, and is due to serve until the end of the year.
His office paid tribute to him as a “committed and passionate advocate for victims”.
A statement read: “Under his leadership, the role of the victims’ commissioner has been transformed – growing in size, influence and authority.
“He leaves the office with a trusted voice and real force for victims: someone who is firmly on their side, champions of justice.
“This renovation stands as a testament to his work and will remain his lasting legacy.”
