One way to flush out a leadership challenge, according to one-time enforcer Gordon Brown, is to push them to the edge.

Some argue that even if this is true – and not everyone agrees with this – Starmer and McSweeney are now inseparable and their success or failure is mutually assured. At every critical juncture, the Prime Minister is accompanied by his closest advisers at the expense of other senior fortides and ministers.
But developments in the past few months have driven a rift between Starmer and McSweeney, to the point where many are questioning how long the staff can last. Like it or not, he has become something of a Bogeyman for many ministers and MPs who blame him for bad decisions and question his judgment and ability to run the government.
The decision to launch an all-out attack ahead of the run time before he was due to start a morning broadcast is the latest case in point. The health secretary gave a reassuring performance in which he said that those who spend too much time watching celebrities are traitors – and should move out of the country. Labor MPS and Aides united in the ideological run emerging in a stronger position than before.
As one Government Aide put it: [parliamentary Labour party]? They just put him in the best position he could ever hope for [by saying]’Let’s take the battle to Wes where he’s weak, on breakfast television’. “
A former government added: “It’s like an elephant picking a fight with a shark and choosing to do it in the middle of the ocean.”
There are competing theories as to when the starmer strategists decided to cross the line and reject the plans that left a Senior Aide, as a “feverish combination for leadership consideration.
Allies of the Prime Minister have warned for several weeks, any challenge will worsen a disastrous economic situation and that any successor to Starmer on the Left and Bad Relations with Donald Trump and the EU. Labor mps scoffed at many of the arguments.
What is clear is that the taking fear of an imminent challenge was shared by the prime minister at the end of the week, and that there was a coordinated decision to smoke any challenge.

Some even thought the move was designed by McSweeney to benefit the run – but this theory was given short shrift by supporters. A well-placed senior official who worked with McSweeney said: “I’ve never heard Morgan have a good word to say about Wes.
Other key figures working with MCSWEney and Streeting say they are not cut from the same cloth. “I always felt that Morgan Political was not with Wes, even though he was with Peter Mandelson – and Mandelson wanted Wes,” said one senior labor aide. “Wes has always been more classically explosive than Morgan,” said one frontbencher.
The same frontbencher who aspires that when push comes to shove, “Morgan will be more loyal to Keir than Keir will be to Morgan”. In recent months the stand has made several interventions to protect his chief of staff, including the cabinet – but there are signs that the relationship between them is no longer.
A 10th source said that the relationship had disappeared from “Starmer’s island of strangers” speech, where he was kept from the public. The Prime Minister is said to have been rocked by criticism from close friends outside politics about the language he used, MPSED ENOCH ENOCH POUCH POWELL said.
This is the point, it is said, when Starmer is convinced that he is ill-advised – and McSweeney’s team is the one pushing for more immigration language.
Starmer has since expressed anger at what he sees as the inability of his assistants to protect him from the MarkSein scandals.
“Many people have tried to drive a wedding between Keir and Morgan and have always failed,” one less than 10 sources. “But this is different.”
