A bill to restrict access to abortion after 22 weeks and six days has been defeated in the South Australian Parliament.
Former One Country MLC Sarah, now an independent, worked alongside controversial anti-abortion activist Joanna Howe in parliament on Wednesday night.
It was chosen by 11 votes to eight.
Many MLCS were visibly upset and tearful during Wednesday night’s debate.
The Attorney General, Kyam Maher, referred to comments from the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of ObstEth
“I can only imagine the pain and anguish that mothers and families must experience when such a difficult decision is made late in pregnancy and for very personal reasons,” she said.

Current law allows abortions from 23 weeks if there is a serious physical or health risk to the mother’s health.
The proposed bill changes the game that is administered to keep abortion where it can save the life of the mother or another fetus, or if there is a significant risk of fetal abnormalities.
He said if a mother’s life is at risk or her health is threatened, doctors should perform an emergency caesarean or induction birth alive.
“We understand that the good practice of medicine is like,” he said when he introduced the law. “In a true emergency, where the life of a mother is at risk – for example, with severe pre-eclampsia, or even in non-emergency situations where her physical health is threatened – the safest and most effective treatment is to terminate the pregnancy by delivering the baby alive.”
The Greens MLC Tammy Franks told parliament that would then disallow abortion in cases of young girls, women who were prevented from accessing earlier abortions, in cases of domestic violence, including in cases of the abuse of minors and vulnerable adults, and in cases of sexual and physical violence including rape, incest and sexual slavery, as well as deteriorating maternal physical health.
