Research led by Queen’s University Belfast found temperatures in 14 of the 16 stadiums used for the 2026 World Cup could exceed dangerous levels during the tournament.

Philadelphia, which is one of the US host cities, was under a severe heat warning during Chelsea’s training sessions when conditions were suffering from 37C but due to 45% humidity conditions it felt like 45C.

England, who have qualified for the tournament with two games to spare, will benefit from later kick-offs if the temperatures are cooler, according to manager Tuchel.

“It probably, definitely helps,” James said, “later kick-offs when it’s not so hot and humid.”

England are planning a warm-weather training camp in Florida to help acclimatiise for the tournament and also set up a “Heat-Proof” plan with Anthony Barry.

Asked if the World Football Association had contacted him for feedback after the Club World Cup, James added:

“I’m sure they’ll ask someone. Maybe managers or people at the clubs. I’m sure they’ll have some feedback.”
