There is a constant quip among BBC staff that “Deputy Heads must roll” with so many mistakes because they rarely have an impact on those at the top of the organisation. That all changed on Sunday, when Tim Davie and Deborah True quit their jobs.
Davie has had no shortage of scandals in his five years as Director General – in recent months it has included a Gaza dossier – and outspoken BBC insiders.
But this week, it did.
However, the trigger for this crisis was a largely forgotten report during the panorama, broadcast more than a year ago, about the US election.
The Daily Telegraph, no friend of the BBC, leaked a report by Michael Prescott, a former adviser to the BBC’s Standards Committee.
Prescott’s report It is suggested that the panorama edited a speech of Donald Trump so that it seems that he clearly encouraged the riots in the Capitol.
Prescott accused the corporation of “Serious and Systemic” bias in its editorial coverage. Perhaps know, the parts on the right immediately go to the report.
Boris Johnson told the Telegraph that Davie “must explain or resign”. The leader of the Tory Party, Kemi Badenoch, said “heads must roll”. The story was picked up in the US, where the White House described the BBC as “100% fake news” and a “propaganda machine”.

Aware of the important role of the corporation in national life, they admit real concern about being happy for major editorial errors. But they also have a deeper fear: that the attacks are part of an ongoing political and ideological campaign by those who want to undermine the organization.
Yet the government has its own concerns with the BBC. Lisa Nandy, the Secretary of Culture, said on Sunday – before the departures – that she had “a lot of conversations, more than I wanted” since I wanted “since the election. There is such a little trust between her and Davie.

Because of this, Nandy understood in private part of many BBC staff that some of the politoral attacks were orchestrated – and that there is a hunger for numbers with the success of generations.
Many within the government – and the progressive parties – share the view that, for all its faults, the role of the public service preserved from the rise of the populist right, is essential.

However politicians think of the BBC, its fate rests with the public, and if the British people have confidence in its future. Ultimately, that depends on fair and accurate reporting, free of political or ideological bias – from any side.
The BBC regularly comes out at the top of the UK Media Trust Rankings. However the latest row comes at a particularly sensitive time, with the government due to review the Royal Charter before the current term ends in 2027.
Senior Government Insiders hope to use the charter review process to “Future Proof” the BBC by putting in place structures that also protect the corporation more accountable.
It must be for the BBC to mend the broken trust with politicians, with their own journalists and – well – with parts of the public.
