In a statement later last night, the NSW Nationals Leader, Dagdal Saunderssaid the decision came after “deep” discussions in the Party room yesterday. They followed a warning from a national unsigned by the Thinktank, the page’s research page, and Senator Ross Cadellwhose policy position informed the Federal Party’s move. Saunders said:
We are aligned with the principle of affordable federal nationals’ better and fairer plan. Regional NSW should not bear all the brunt of the change in the labor rollout.
Saunders said the Party would work with coalition partners to reach “a clear, united position” on an energy policy with “reliability” at its heart. The move comes after national governments voted to abandon Net Zero in June.
Speaker, who faces a potential leadership challenge in the final weeks of the year’s sitting amid poor polling, will discuss what will happen to Net Zero Cash if the Nationals abandon the policy. He said “that bridge will be crossed when we come to it”, but that he supports “an aspiration of Net Zero by 2050”.
I think this is very clear in the way that people voted in 2025 and 2022 at a federal level. Compare that to what happened in 2023 [state elections] where we have no losses in northern Sydney. People want a liberal party with strong environmental credentials.
