Hastings Mums are leading efforts to reform NHS Menopause

A woman from East Sussex who went into sudden menopause after having surgery to remove both ovaries is campaigning to change NHS policy in this area.

Kate Dyson, 44, from Hastings, underwent the operation six months ago after a suctotal hysterectomy just four years ago to remove her uterus – a procedure that leaves the cervix in place.

The Mum-of-Three said she was completely unprepared for the impact of menopause surgery, which was triggered by having both ovaries removed.

“It’s honestly like falling off a hormonal cliff,” she says Sussex on BBC Radio.

“For many hours of the operation I was still at home. I experienced hot flushes, confusion, and the first night I moaned in the morning and I was absolutely moaning,” I said in a sweat, “he said.

According to research by Newson Health and Dr Ceri Cerhelell, only 4.8% of 126 menopausal men in three NHS hospitals who operated on two ovaries received HRT afterwards.

This is despite the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) and British Menopause recommending HRT until the average age of natural menopause, at age 51.

Ms Dyson set up the Surge Website in a bid to create a “One-Stop Shop” for all things surrounding surgery.

Her biggest goal is to create a space where those affected can learn what life looks like “in a whole new chapter of menopause surgery”.
