Three people died and at least 15 were injured in separate incidents linked to moderate seas that bounded the island of Tenerife, dragging many victims into the sea, marine services said.
A rescue helicopter resuscitated a man who fell into the water at a beach in La Guancha, a municipality in the north of the island, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A local newspaper, El Día, said the man was a 43-year-old Estand who was fishing at the site of the accident and “fell from a great height”.
A person was also found floating at EL CabeEZO BEACH in the south. Staff and medical personnel tried to resuscitate him but he died at the scene. His identity has not been disclosed.
A woman suffered a fatal heart attack when a giant wave swept 10 people into the sea in the northern city of Puerto de la Cruz. El Día reported that the woman is a 79-year-old Dutch Citizen.
Emergency services said on social media that “several people fell into the water after a sudden spill on the road”.
Police and people fought to save the group after an unexpectedly high wave crashed into a pier near the port, dragging it out to sea. Three victims were seriously injured and were treated at the hospital.
The local broadcaster la radio canaria shared footage of x that it was said shown at the moment when the wave rolled over many people from the Puerto de la Cruz Pier.
At least five people were injured at Roque de Las Bodega Beach in the northeast corner of the island when a strong wave swept them into the sea. El Día said all were French tourists.
Tenerife is a Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa. The emergency services issued a warning for sudden sea currents and strong winds, which are common in autumn and winter, and the archipelago of coastal hazards.
The public is urged to avoid Vantage’s exposed points at the Piers and Breakwater where visitors often stop to take photos and videos of crashing waves.
