Twelve people are missing and one person is dead after a boat carrying migrants capsized near the border between Thailand and Malaysia.

The vessel is believed to have anchored near the southern Thai Island of KO TARTANAO on Thursday, the Malaysian Coast Guard said.

Ten people were rescued and the body of a woman was found floating in the sea.

Maritime officials believe the victims were part of a group of about 300 people traveling on a larger ship before they approached Malaysia.

Those rescued near the Malaysian Resort in Langkawi include three Myanmar men, two Rohingya men and a Malaysian state-run man.

The body found in the water was that of a Rohingya woman, the report added.

Search efforts for more survivors are underway.

The Muslim-majority Solim community has fled Buddhist-majority Myanmar for years to escape persecution.

The conflict and conditions in the refugee camps in Bangladesh also continue to push vulnerable people onto overcrowded boats as they seek a better life in Malaysia.

Officials said many of the escapees could pay more than $3,000 (£2,300) for passage.
