Opposition calls on government to address uncertainties surrounding Social Media and under-16s
The federal opposition asks the Albanese government to quickly address the “uncertainty” surrounding the age of social media at the start of a month.
The first global restrictions will start on 10 December, requiring platforms including Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Youtube, x and Tiktubok to prevent under-16s.
The Minister of Language Communication, Melissa McINTOSHsaid many issues remain unclear, including the final list of platforms to be captured.
The government last week added message board Reddit and video streaming platform to the banned list while leaving the door open to more, such as Gaming Platform Roblox.
Mcintosh said:
The purpose of the ban is to protect children online, but in this hasty, last-minute approach to adding new platforms, and what will they use social media companies? The additional platforms added to the banned list happened in an easy way. Last week, the minister said there was ‘still room for movement’ towards the 10 December implementation date. As a matter of urgency, the government needs to confirm the entire list of children’s platforms is not possible.
McINTosh criticized the government’s government information campaign to promote the “Setlusluster” ban, saying that parents, schools and children were not given enough time to prepare.
