Severe storms with the potential for damaging winds and heavy hail are expected to move into New South Wales on Saturday.
Storms are also expected in parts of Queensland and Victoria.
Thunderstorms are a risk for much of NSW’s East Coast, including the chance of wind gusts above 125km/h, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
“Those damaging winds, very dangerous storms,” said meteorologist Christie Johnson.
Severe storms are likely across the Hunter, Mid-North North on the northern tablelands, and may also bring the risk of strong winds, heavy rain with the potential for flash flooding.
For the Sydney Metropolitan Area, the greatest risk of severe storms will be from the morning and into the afternoon, Johnson said.
“It can cause damage to cars, property, plants, can be strong enough to be carried by trees or power lines and in high traffic and stop transportation,” he said.

High fire risk and warm temperatures are expected ahead of a cold front moving across the state, with a top of 32C forecast for Sydney, 31C for Newcastle and 29C for Wollongong.
“It’s going to be warm and partly dark,” Johnson said. “There is also a severe fire risk with catastrophic risk for much of Central and Eastern NSW today and a fire warning for the north-west fire district.”
Johnson said Queensland could expect “showers and thunderstorms from the north-west to the south-east in the east today and moving towards the south-east coast later”.

Victoria will see rainfall of around 15 to 30mm, across many areas surrounding Melbourne’s East across Gippsland and the NSW Border.
Johnson said it could lead to some creek and isolated minor creek flooding, and flood warnings will be issued as needed.
