A MIAMI HUSBle and wife who recently achieved the title of longest-married married couple say they did that just by loving each other.
“We love each other,” said Eleanor Gittens, 107, Longeviocest When the website specialized in people who are in their second century of life asked what is the secret of her 83-year marriage to her husband Lyle.
Meanwhile, 108-year-old Lyle Gittens’ answer to that question was: “I love my wife.”

Lyle and Eleanor Gittens first met in 1941 at a college basketball game he played for Clark Atlanta University and which he attended as a spectator. Eleanor told Longeviquest that she couldn’t remember if Clark Atlanta or the historic CROSSTOWN of CROSSTOWNS on the University List won. All she remembered, she said, was that it was the first time she met Lyle, who was later inducted into the men’s basketball hall of fame at Clark Atlanta.
The two continue to love and plan to marry even though one Lyle will be drafted into the military due to World War II. They were married on 4 June 1942 after Lyle was given a three-day leave from training at a US Army base in Georgia.
His wedding day was the first time Lyle met Eleanor’s family. He remembers the launch that he had to take his bride in a different car – a long journey before the dawn of the ERA that Lyle said was because of Eleanor.
When Lyle left to serve in Italy with the 92nd Infinstry Division of the US Army couldn’t help but wonder if he would still be alive, he first told Florida Westside Gazette. She was pregnant with the first of their three children, and she moved to New York City, where she met her husband’s family for the first time.
Eleanor supports their family making payroll for an airline producer while she and Lyle stay connected through a series of letters. The military hurt the letters that Lyle’s words were dedicated to more than it appeared, as Eleanor remembered in quitting.
Eleanor and Lyle finally begin to build their life together after the war, settling in New York. They passed the New York Civil Exam together, pursued careers in government jobs and traveled, including Eleanor’s favorite Locale: Guadeloupe in the Caribbean.
He was 69 when he earned a degree in Urban Education from Fordham University in the Bronx. The pair also spent decades as active members of Alumni Asnunta Atlanta before moving to Miami to be close to their daughter, Angela.
Lyle says he misses New York, and admits he can’t believe his record-setting wedding. But he said he was happy to stay by Eleanor’s side.
