Getty ImagesTesla Boss Elon Musk has been one of the richest people in the world for many years now, and that fortune has recently rivaled the first half of the trillionaire.
Despite this, Musk insisted that he lead a largely ungodly lifestyle. He said in 2021 that he lives in a house in Texas valued at $50,000 (£38,000).
His ex-partner, with whom he has two children, spoke out Vanity Fair in 2022 He did not live the extravagant life of extravagant luxury that many assume.
“Bro doesn’t live like a billionaire. Bro lives moments below the poverty line,” he told the magazine. Once, he said, he refused to buy a new mattress, even on the side with a hole in it.
While his daily living in the shelters may not be as easy as one would expect, it is known that there is a love for unusual cars, including one that can be a submarine. He also has a private jet collection, worth several million dollars.
And then have a little splurge in 2022, If he bought Twitter for a casual $44bn.
The luxury mansions – which he sold
Musk used to have an impressive realfolio portfolio. The Wall Street Journal It was reported in 2019 that he spent $100m on seven houses in about seven years – most of them a stone roastery in a famous neighborhood of Bel-Air, California.
Additionally, the properties boast swimming pools, a tennis court, cellar space, a private library and a ballroom. One is a ranch house once owned by the legendary Willy Willy Wilka Actorce Gene Wilder.
But in 2020, musk has a change of heart – tweet that he will be “Selling almost all bodily possessions” and “homelessness”.
“No need for money. Spend myself on Mars and Earth. Fares only to weigh you,” he wrote.
There is a stipulation – that the house of Gene Wilder, “will not be destroyed or lost by anything [of] the soul”.
He sold the three-bedroom property – to Wilder’s nephew, Walker-Pearlman, after he was given a million dollar loan to buy it. But in June 2025, Musk reclaimed ownership, after Mr Walker-Pearlman reportedly fell behind on payments.
In 2021, Musk tweeted that his “primary residence” is a modest prefabricated house worth about $ 50,000 in the southern Texas state, where his aerospace company Spacex operates – an area that has officially become a city called Scarbase.
“It’s kind of weird,” Musk said of the humble abode.
The following year, Musk said he did not own a home, using it as an example of how little he consumes, despite his vast wealth.
“I actually stayed at friends’ places,” he told the head of the Ted media organization, Chris Anderson. “When I’m traveling in the Bay Area, which is where most of Tesla Engineering is, I’m basically rotating through friends’ rooms.”
This is not new – in 2015, then-Google CEO Larry Panid told the author Ashlee Vance that musk “is different from homeless”.
“He would e-mail and say, ‘I don’t know where to stay tonight. Can I come?'”
There has been various speculation over the years that Musk has been buying properties around the US, although the Texas home appears to be the only official owner.

While Musk doesn’t spend much on property, cars are a different matter.
As the owner of Tesla, it is not surprising that he has a large collection of unusual, and in some cases rare, cars.
They include a Ford Model T, the 20th century car credited with being the first affordable car, revolutionizing the motor industry.

Most unusual, is the 1976 lotus esprit driven by James Bond in the 1977 film The Spy Who Loved Me.
In the film, the car, called the wet Nellie, can transform into a submarine. Musk bought the car at an auction in 2013 for nearly $1m with the aim of developing its submarine-transforming capabilities once again.

Musk admits that airplanes are another thing that he is happy to part with, but is forced to do so in his dedication to his work.
“If I don’t use the plane, then I don’t have much time to work,” he said in the 2022 TED interview.
Among the private jets in his collection are a number of Gulfstream models, worth tens of millions of dollars each.
He uses them to travel between spacex and Tesla sites in the US, as well as for international travel.
Unnatural philanthropy?
Musk has Given billions of dollars in staff sharesaccording to US regulatory documents, and promised many millions of different reasons. But his Philanthropy was criticized.

His charitable organization, the Musk Foundation, says on its website that it is “dedicated to the advancement of human development, scientific progress, and ambitious endeavors that make it possible”.
But the New York Times reported that the foundation falls short of the amount required to be provided for three consecutive years. The paper, which saw the foundation’s tax filings, also found that many of its donations had organized links to Musk.
Elon Musk, and the musk foundation have been contacted for comment.
When asked about Philanthropy and charitable causes in the past, Musk showed no qualms about traditional charitable gifts.
“I think if you care about the reality of the benevolence instead of the understanding of it, Philanthropy is very difficult,” he told Chris Anderson in 2022.
In Muska, the existence of his philanthropic distribution business:
