The man Donald Trump calls a “great leader”, and has long angered his own circles, suddenly found himself in an important position – on an issue of critical importance. Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary, visited the White House on Friday to try to resolve an oil dispute with Russia. Orban wants to keep buying it, but Trump wants countries to arm themselves with Russian energy and help put the brakes on Russia’s war in Ukraine. Will Trump choose to keep an old friend close, or put pressure on Putin? We spoke to Nick Thorpe, the BBC’s Budapest correspondent, who has covered Oban since the 1980s.
