Qantas has released the “first images” of the specially configured plane that will fly Australians non-stop from Sydney to London and New York from 2027.
The A350-100-100-100-100-100-100 at the Airbus Assembly Line in Toulouse, France, with sections of the fuselage, wings and landing gear attached, the airline said on Friday.
The plane will soon be moved to a new hangar where engines and instruments will be installed for test flights in 2026, Qantas said.
The carrier has ordered a dozen of planes for “Project Sunrise” – The plan to connect the East Coast of Australia with London and New York through flights.
The 22-hour journeys will cut up to four hours from the total journey time compared to the current Stornes services.
The airline released the imagery on Friday to join the annual general meeting in Brisbane. Cabin images previously released.
“This is an aircraft that will change what is possible when it comes to international air travel,” CEO of Qanesas Hudson, Vanesta Hudson, said in an advance copy of her speech to shareholders.
“Our teams are very excited about the arrival of the first aircraft late next year, a landmark moment for international aviation.”
Qantas has been flying direct from Perth, on the Australian coast, to London using Boeing Dreamliners since 2018.
Qantas said on Friday it expected domestic revenue to grow by about 3% in the first half, which was at the lower end of its guidance given in August.
While demand for leisure travel remains strong, businesses outside the resource sector are flying less than expected, the company said.
Its forecast for international revenue remains unchanged at 2-3% growth, while Qantas loyalty growth remains strong and on track.
Qantas said on Friday it will introduce a new cabin product on domestic flights and low-cost passengers with extra leg-room, priority access to overhead tadgage space.
Qantas Economy Plus will be available for purchase starting in February, with a high level of frequent flyers receiving complimentary access.
