A child has died after being hit by a freight train near Narrabri in New South Wales.
Emergency services were called to Baranbah Street in the small village of Baan Baa in the state’s North at 7.50pm on Friday.
The one-year-old girl was treated by NSW ambulance paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital, where she died.
Officers from Oxley Police District were told the boy was walking on the road before being hit by the train.
The 22-year-old train driver has not been identified, but was taken to the hospital for mandatory testing.
The police set up a crime scene and a report is ready for the coroner.
Fewer than 50 families live in the town, according to the last census, which is located about 500km northwest of Sydney.
