A man appeared in court as the extradition hearing began in the case of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan woman who was killed near a British base in 2012.

Robert Purkiss, 38, originally from Greater Manchester, appeared at Westminster magistrates court on Friday, intending to fight extradition. It is understood he was arrested on Thursday evening.

An arrest warrant for Purkiss was issued by a Nairobi court in September. The prosecution said in a Kenyan court that Purkiss was charged with one count of murder, and that the Kenyan government would seek his extradition.

Purkiss previously served as a medic with the Lancaster regiment, the re-infantry for the North-West of England, including tours of Afghanistan.

Wanjiru, 21, a hairdresser with a daughter, disappeared overnight, and her body was found two months later in the grounds of the hotel where she was seen.

No one has ever been arrested or charged in connection with her death. The arrest of Purkiss follows a fresh investigation by the police, which came after a report in 2021 in the Sunday times, where the newspaper approached several soldiers of the regiment.

The investigation is led by Kenyan detectives, who, under a bilateral defense agreement, retain jurisdiction over the case.
