There are growing calls for the federal government to address the risks posed to children on the Placlue Platform Roblox after a week published a report documenting a week of virtual harassment and violence.
While playing as an eight-year-old girl, the reporter was given an accused avatar, cyberbullied, aggressively killed, sexually assaulted and shat all parental control settings.
While platforms including Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube and Kick will soon be included in the Australian ban from 10 December, roblox will not.

“If they start rolling out features like they’ve become a social media company rather than an online gaming company, then we’ll be looking for them.”

But some critics have suggested that this is too limiting for platforms that combine gaming and social interaction. Niiusha Shafiabady, an Associate Professor of information technology at the Catholic University of Australia, believes that roblox should be included in the ban.
He points to the way the platform allows players to create content and interact. “It’s like an indoor social media platform,” he said.

A spokeswoman for the communications minister, Anika Wells, said the decision not to include roblox under the social media responsibilities did not exempt it from the Online Akturt Act.
A spokesperson for eSafety said it “has taken important safety commitments from Roblox that can protect children from a range of harms including online coercion”.

Eosafety said it will “monitor the implementation of these commitments from roblox and consider regulatory action in cases of future non-compliance”.
Joanna Orlando, a digital well-being expert at Western Sydney University, said the two main concerns of children were playing the “biggest game in the world”.
He said it’s a mistake to think it’s a video game. “It’s a lot more — there’s more social layers, there’s more people — there’s everybody and anybody on that platform,” he said.
The Greens’ communications spokeswoman, Sarah Hanson-Young, said the government was “trying to play whack-a-line” with social media bans.
“I want the big tech companies to make sure that kids, of any age … are safe,” he said.
“We need to hit these companies where it hurts, and that’s their business model and the government is afraid to do that.”
The shadow communications minister, Melissa McINTosh, also raised concerns about the platform. He said while Roblox has strong safeguards in place, “we as parents need to be vigilant in protecting our children online”.
“The Wills Commissioners and the government have a responsibility to do everything they can to protect our children from the growing threat of online predators,” he said.
A Roblox spokesperson said that the platform is “committed to leading the way in security through strict policies that go above and beyond what other platforms have”.
“We use AI to check for violative content before a game is published, we do not allow users to share images or videos in chat, and we use advanced text filters designed to stop kids from sharing personal information,” he said.
