First thing: Another chance to return to 1.5C climate goal, experts say | US news

Good morning.

There is still an opportunity for the world to avoid the worst destruction of the climate and return to the objective of the Greenhouse emissions of Greenhouse gas emissions, according to an analysis.

The climate analysis report says that the government’s goals are not enough and should be actively changed. It calls for the rapid scaling-up of the use of renewable energy and electrification in many sectors including transport, heating and industry.

The timing of the report is significant, as world leaders meet for Cop30 in Belzil, Brazil, where all countries are expected to have climate plans under the 2015 Paris Agreement. Last week, the Trump administration confirmed that the US would not send high-level representatives to Cop30.

  • How are things standing? In the past two years, global temperatures have exceeded the 1.5C threshold above Prefustrial levels set by the 2015 Paris Agreement. A UN Head of the UN Environment Program published this week said that the governments current plans will lead to catastrophic warming of about 2.3-2.5C.

  • What the President of Brazil said? “This [summit] an opportunity for politicians, diplomats, scientists, activists and journalists to witness … the real situation in the region,” Luiz Inácio LulA Silva wrote for the Guardian.

The Supreme Court left no doubt on the legal basis of the flow of the Global Tariff Regime on Wednesday, after the justices questioned the levies.

Even conservative justices questioned the strength of the administration’s position. “The automobile is the taxation of the American people, and that has always been a primary power of Congress,” said Chief Justice John Roberts.

  • What is the situation? Trump imposed the tariffs through the 1977 international economic emergency power, which in some circumstances gives the president the President – but in a national emergency.

Zohran Mamdani’s incoming administration began taking shape Wednesday as the New York City Mayor-elect announced the Transition Team to help craft the city’s most ambitious policy platform in a generation.

Among the queens, the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist revealed an all-female shield led by Elana Leopold as executive director. It also includes co-chairs Maria Torres-Springer, the former first deputy mayor; Lina Khan, the former Federal Trade Commission Chairs; United Way President and Chief, Grace Bonilla; and former Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Melanie Hartzog.

  • What is Mamdani’s Key Campaign Policies? He wants a rent to fix for stabilized apartments, free bus service, universal care stores and city-run grocery by corporations of corporations and the rich.

  • What obstacles does Mandani’s management face? Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to withhold Federal funding from the city if Mamdani takes office. New York City’s budget for fiscal year 2026 includes approximately $7.4bn in Federal Funding, accounting for about 6.4% of total spending.

The Federal Government Government Shutdown became the longest in history yesterday, surpassing the 35-day record set in December 2018 and January 2019 during Donald Trump’s first term. For the nearly 42 million people who receive food stamps, the Department of Agriculture provides only 50% of the usual funding. Meanwhile, officials said the federal government will reduce air traffic by 10% from Friday if the government shutdown is not resolved before then.
