San Siro: AC Milan and Inter to dismantle the stadium to compete in the Premier League

“For us, this is a historic moment,” said Milan Chairman Paolo Carono. “It’s taken five or six years to get to this point and we’ve had a lot of support from our Redbird owners.

“San Siro has not been included by UEFA as a stadium for Euro 2032 – it does not have all the facilities required for modern football. We do not really need a new stadium.

“We have always had a good relationship with Inter, so this means continuing to share the new stadium and share the costs of building and running it.”

Although the plans will only be published in the first half of 2026 and no end date has been set, the purchase of the stadium is an important step as both clubs aim to return to past glories.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, serie A was the first football league in the world. Its clubs spent the most money, bought the best players and attracted the attention of fans around the world.

But over the past 20 years, the divide has undergone a steady decline. The performances of its clubs have decreased in the elite level of Europe, the average attendance in stadiums falling every single summer than the lower and mid-table teams in the summer.

The long-term drop-off can be traced to Milan and Inter’s gains in results in the UEFA Champions League since it was rebranded in 1992.

Despite reaching two finals in previous years, they won it in 2010 and Milan most recently in 2007, although Real Madrid won the competition on aggregate rather than the Rossoneri.
