The government of Peru has announced that the country has severed diplomatic relations with Mexico over the asylum claim of former prime minister Betsy Chávez, who is being investigated for rebellion.

The authorities accused Chávez of participating in a failed effort in 2022 by the then President, Pedro Castillo, to declare a state of emergency and dissolve Peru’s parliament. He was arrested after prosecutors accused him of trying to promote a coup and he remains in prison.
The Peruvian Attornia’s office accused Chávez of being an accomplice in the crime of rebellion against the powers of the State, and sought a state term of up to 25 years. Chávez denied knowing about Castillo’s plan to dissolve the legislature.
“Today we know the surprise and deep regret that the former prime minister Betsy Chávez, who was tried by the co-author of the former presental in Peru,” de Zela told reporters.
The Mexican government said it regretted Peru’s decision, which found Mexico granting Chávez Asylum in compliance with international law.

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday that since the events of December 2022, “the government of Mexico has interfered in an unacceptable and systematic way in the internal affairs of Peru”.
It said Mexico has not changed its “unacceptable position” despite the Peruvian government’s repeated requests to respect its sovereignty.
