Nigerian-set drama My Father is the leading contender for British independent film Formish, best British director for Akinala Davies JR, and best screenplay for Davies’ brother. The film came out ahead of the pillion, adapted from the story of the relationship of Adam Mars-Jones, which got 10 nominations, and the biopic I swear, which got nine.
My father’s shadow, which stars Sope Sope Dirisu and is Davies’ Debut Feature as a director, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews. Peter Bradshaw described it as “a transparently personal project and a future film about the end of their Father who was never in their life”. The film is yet to be released in the UK, but has been completed in Nigeria.
The pillion, too, had a successful premiere in Cannes in May, with Bradshaw calling with a little smidgent and a cross of Finland Harry Bridge that could be a little smidgent and a cross of VInnett and Some a Bread Smidgent and Some a Bread Smidgent and Some a Bread Smidgent and Really Really Directt and Clear of VInshy Smidgent and Some Smidgent Bread and Real Truth in VInstt and Bread Due for UK release later in November, it’s up for best independent British film, best director for Lighton and best performance for Harry Melling.
I Swear is already in theaters, released in October. A Life Story of Tourette Syndrome Afftibist John Davidson, the film is also for the best British director for Kirk Jones, and best performance for Robert Aramiayo.
The nominations also include, for the first time, an award for cinema of the year, which is appreciated by the public. Contenders include the lewes depot, the magic lantern in Tywyn, Montrose Playhouse, The Queen’s Film Theater in Belfast and the Watershed in Bristol.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 30 November.
