Australian scientists and independent MP Ryan are urging work to accelerate the development of Australian medicine funded by US research in the US.
Ryan, the Kooyong MP and Pediatric Neurologist, urged the Albanese government to release more of the earnings from the $20BN Medical Research Fund, on top of the annual disbursement of $650m.
Research by the Parliamentary Budget office shows the total value of the MRFF will grow to at least $30.1bn over a decade, although $1bn is released for research funding each year.

The fund’s average annual rate of return has quickly outpaced the benchmark since the turnbull government took over in 2015, and labor’s recovery of life will boost innovation.
Recent Treasury figures put the current value of the MRFF at $24.1bn.
Ryan’s calls for more funding to be made available each year are supported by Australia’s leading research organisations, Science Australia.

“Locking up this critical funding threatens the future of life-changing savings,” Ryan said.
“Hundreds of quality research proposals have gone unfunded in recent years. MRFF funds are released not only for Australian research outcomes.”
Ryan linked the push for Trump’s measures to slashing funding and staff appointments at the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Along with his controversial health and human Services Secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, the United States replaced scientists with scientists and individuals.
Australian researchers have long been linked to trusted US health institutions, including the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration) and the National Institutes of Health. FDA approvals for new drugs help guide approvals for use in Australia.
Ryan said Trump has destroyed medical research funding and “set up” the US CDC.
“The survival of Australia’s world-class research institutions is also at stake,” he said.

Trump’s Budget Propet cuts for the US CDC by the US CDC by 53%, eliminating more than 60 programs and seeing a 16% staff fired in September.
On Thursday, Ryan highlighted research projects missing out on MRFF funding, including a clinical trial of women targeting women and children in Adelaide.
Associate Prociate Prof Adam McKay from Monash University’s Epworth Center for Rehabilitation suggests research to help patients who have recovered from traumatic injuries also get brain funding. The proposal aims to implement and evaluate best practice management of post-traumatic amnesia.
“This research will help people with traumatic brain injury get the best care at a critical time in their recovery,” McKay said. “Instead, we see opportunities being lost.”
