Lewis Moody 'overwhelmed' by support since Mnd diagnosis

Moody discovered he had MND after noticing some weakness in his shoulder while training at the gym.

After physiotherapy failed to improve the problem, a series of scans showed the nerves in his brain and spinal cord were damaged.

Moody, who has two sons, ages 17 and 15, says dealing with the mental impact of his diagnosis has been harder than the physical effects so far.

“I had minor hand and shoulder symptoms,” Moody said.

“The only real effect on you is in the back of your mind. It stays.

“Try to park and focus on each day. Get the most joy you can out of each day. Feel that you have a purpose and apply yourself.”

MN can progress quickly and be irreversible but treatment can slow the deterioration.

Undressed athletes are affected by Mnd, with a study of Italian footballers suggesting a disease rate up to six times higher than the general population.

It is thought that by limiting oxygen availability and causing damage to motor neurone cells, regular, vigorous exercise can be detrimental to those who are genetically predisposed.
