An avalanche swept through a camp on Mount Yalung RI in Nepal, killing five foreign climbers and two Nepali guides, officials said.

Shailendra Thapa, a spokesman for the armed police of the police force, five other people were hurt at the base camp, which is located at 4,900 meters (16,070ft).

The nationalities and identities of the foreigners on board have not been confirmed, but local media reported that three were US citizens, one Canadian and Italian.

The weather has been running since last week in Nepal, with snowstorms reported in the mountains.

Rescuers reached the site on foot. A rescue helicopter tried to reach the site but bad weather forced it to turn back. Thapa said it will be tried again on Tuesday morning.

Mount Yalung Ri is a 5,600-meter peak. It is considered a mountain for beginners who have no previous experience in climbing high mountains.

Nepal is home to eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest. Spring is the most popular time to climb, when the weather is favorable for high peaks.

However, hundreds of foreign riders climb the small peaks in the autumn months between the rainy monsoon monthe and winter.
