The Edenbridge Bonfire Society said the effigy resembled a male female because “the starmer is doing well on his own at the moment”.

Sir Keir Starmer was unveiled as an effigy this year for the annual bonfire celebration at Edenbridge Bonfire.

The Society said that the Prime Minister was chosen for Saturday’s celebration as he received more votes than other figures.

The group has been “entertaining famous celebrities” for over 30 years, with past targets including Donald TrumpBoris Johnson, plus Ticketmaster and the Gallagher Brothers.

The Prime Minister’s office has been contacted for comment.

BBC South East has been given an exclusive preview to see the decision-making process and the process of making the effigy.

First, the society put it to a public vote where Sir Keir was one of the other contenders including Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and Siela Rayner.

Laura Lawrence, of the Edenbridge Bonfire Society, said: “This year’s effIGY has for the first time ever had a person who has managed to set himself off at the moment.”

He said that the sausages representing his head represented the accident that he said “sausage” instead of “hostages”.

In a nod to the local farming community, he said he has a “Starmer the Farmer Harmer” Badge because he decisions around inheritance tax there are “leftist farmers in turmoil”.

Andrea Deans, the artist and co-chair of the Edenbridge Bonfire Society, has been creating effenies since 2016.

He said: “I think the most challenging thing is its scale. It hasn’t changed in the last 10 years.

“It’s the same concept, the same structure. What changes are the subjects and the elements that we can put in.”

He said it was “a little more controversial every year”.

“It’s hard to decide what’s appropriate, what’s the backlash, that’s a little difficult,” he added.

The Chaird of the Bonfire Society, Bill Cummings said: “We hold everyone to account and we will burn anyone, no matter how important.

“We put in an effigy of Liz Truss a few years ago and the lettuce on her shoulder wasn’t light, so someone had someone carry it to the front of our procession.”

The not-for-profit organization has been celebrating Bonfire Night for nearly 100 years.
