Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lule da Silva, said his government would seek an independent investigation into what he called a “deplorable” police killing.
Four officers and at least 117 others were killed when police launched a major raid on two of Rio’s biggest gangs and the Complexo Da Penha, early Tuesday to execute 100 warrants.
The attack on the police – the deadliest in the history of Brazil – made international headlines when scores of mutilated bodies were thrown in one of the working areas of the areas where the operation ended. The dead included a 14-year-old and a 19-year-old who were dismembered and exposed to a tree. A police victim had his leg amputated after being shot.
There was widespread public support for the killings, which was attributed to Rio’s governor, Cláudio Castro, who ran a massive crackdown on RIO’s Red Command, one of Rio’s biggest crime groups.
But speaking in the City of Belém in the Amazon on Tuesday said that while “some may see a success from the point of deaths” that he believed to be “damaging” an action of the state.
“There was a massacre, and I think it is important to verify the conditions under it,” Lula told reporters in Belém for the start of the Cop30 Summit.
“The judgment order [authorizing the operation] for arrest warrants to be issued, not a massacre. And there was a massacre,” said Lula in Belém, which is almost 2,500km north of RIO in the Amazon from its PARÁM capital from its PARÁM capital.
