The ‘Mussel’ of AI, Professor Fei-Fei Li told the BBC that she was the only one among the seven pioneers of the artificial prize presented by the king today as “a proud breed”.
The king will present the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for engineering to announce the prof and six others during a ceremony at St James’s Palace.
Those honored alongside her are Prof Yoshua Bengio, Dr Bill Dally, Dr Geoffrey Hinton, Prof John Hopfield, Nvidia founder Jensen Huang and Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Dr Yann LeCun.
They are recognized for their contributions to the development of modern machine learning, a field that underlies the rapid development of AI.

There is only one called “Wind” in AI and Prof LI told the BBC that he has grown to accept the moniker.
“I don’t call myself a Servant,” he said.
He said a few years ago when people started calling him, he had to “Stop if I reject it, I don’t know these scientists and technologies to know this way”.
“Because men are easily referred to as scumbags or founding fathers.”
“For all the young women I work with and the generations of girls to come, it’s okay now to accept this title,” she added.
Born in China, Prof LI immigrated to the US as a teenager and continued to engage in computer science. He is director of the Stanford Computer Science Department, and co-founder and CEO of the labs labs.
It was his work on imagenet, a project that made major advances in computer vision for which he is recognized.
He and his students created large image recognition datasets on which many artificial intelligence technologies are now built. It provides the methodology for computer vision – which works on how computers ‘see’.
He spoke of the importance of that data set “to open the floodgates of AI-powered data”.
He thinks the next Ai Milestone will come when it is able to interact with the world around it.
This ability is “insignificant and native to animals and humans”, and if it is locked in Ai, it can be the “power” of learning, design and architecture”.
This is the first time that all seven laureates are together in person.
The three “godfathers” have publicly expressed conflicting views on how dangerous AI is.
Dr. Hinton has repeatedly stated Serious concerns about the potential for AI to pose a “loss level” threat. But Prof Lecun, who also works at MEMA has already written Apocalyptic Warnings are raised.
Prof Li said he was taking a more “pragmatic approach” and said disagreement among scientists was “healthy”.
“We use even disagreement, and I think that it is healthy. A topic that is very deep and impactful as AI requires a lot of healthy debate and public discourse.
“I think in the case of AI, the extreme rhetoric worries me… I always advocate for a more science-based, pragmatic approach to communicating and educating the public.
“So, yes, I would like to see our communication with AI be more moderate and based on facts and science instead of extreme rhetoric”.
The Queen Elizabeth Prize is awarded annually to engineers responsible for groundbreaking innovations that benefit humanity. Previous recipients include sire berlers Lee, the Creator of the World Wide Web.
