University energy researchers say their modeling of Australia’s economy reaching Net Zero Greenhouse Gas Rations – which national parties use as an excuse to drop the target – has failed.

Nationals this week confirmed they will no longer support the target of reaching NET ZERO Emissions by 2050 and the coalition is facing internal pressure from some MPs to follow suit.
But on Wednesday, NzA – which includes academics from Princeton University, the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland – released a statement saying its estimated costs were disputed.

“Various individuals and groups have misrepresented Key Cost estimates from [our] The Australian project as ‘the cost of Australia reaching Net Zero’, “it says.” These erroneous costs usually range from $1.5 trillion to $9 trillion. “
The group said that the $9tn figure related to the work carried out in 2023, and an estimate of the Cumulative Capital Investment that will be required in energy systems in 2060
But Nza said “a lot” of that capital – too mentioned by Liberal Mp Andrew alie – comes from “overseas customers and not Australians”.
“Operating costs and fuel costs are in addition to capital investment and are particularly important in fossil-fuel-intensive energy systems,” the group said.
