The actions of the 48-year-old from Doncaster at the Cross Service in London on Saturday night were described as “nothing short of heroic”.

“His actions were unbelievable, and we are very proud of him, and all of our colleagues who acted with such courage that night.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Sam and his family. We will continue to support them and wish him a full and speedy recovery.”

It is thought that Mr. Zitounun “blocked” the attacker from grabbing a girl, leaving her with a gash on her head and neck.

In a statement, his family said they were “extremely proud of Sam and his bravery”.

“The police called him a hero on Saturday night, but to us he will always be a hero,” they said.

“We have been so touched by the outpouring of love and kindness shown to Sam, and by the many wishes for his recovery.

“The care provided at the hospital and the support from his LNer colleagues was unbelievable.”
